For most IELTS examinees, reading is by far the
toughest part and the one which requires more practice and training. Here are
some tips on how to make the reading training as efficient as possible. These
tips are quite general and are based on what is known to best train any
examinee in IELTS reading and how to avoid some of the most common mistakes.
Be Fearless
Many IELTS candidates are afraid to read because they
believe that it is very hard and so they fail to get a passing score when in
fact they are not that hard. If you, however, read a lot of “native English” IELTSbooks and reading materials then you should be able to be very confident
and fearless. If you are confident to read, then you will surely rarely commit
mistakes and you’ll surely pass the test.
Start with short articles and read the ones which you
have interest with so that you won’t feel that reading is a burden to you.
Enjoy the whole reading exercise. Move up to a more difficult reading material
until you are at ease at reading and understanding difficult “native English”
books.
Improve the Basic Skills
One of the major problems in a test is the length of
the text. Trust me; you will not have enough time to read them all. Well, you
can train yourself with speed reading. Practice skimming and scanning. You can
find some online IELTS learning systems where you can practice those
skills.
Find what Works Best
You need to have a definite strategy so that you will
be able to manage your time wisely during the IELTS reading test.
Yes, you need a strategy because the length of text and the short time provided
for the reading activity would surely give you some headaches.
Focus on the question
The reading texts in IELTS are quite hard so
people tend spend more time in reading the text without focusing on the exact
question. This is a very big mistake because they are just wasting their time.
Focus on the question and use skimming or scanning to find the main key to the
answer in the text.
Know everything about the exam
There are different types of reading questions that an
IELTS examination uses. Before taking the exam, make sure that you are familiar
with them so that you will know which strategy or what to expect from those
kinds of reading tests. There are IELTS online resources that could help
with this or you can buy some IELTS Books and Reviewers.
